Kwek-kwek: These are quail eggs coated with flour that caught our attention because of it’s bright orange color that looks like a ping pong ball. We had a cup of kwek-kwek that costs 50 pesos for 5 or 6 pieces so we are expecting that it’s price would pay back on our level of satisfaction. So we excitedly picked up a bamboo skewer and poked the kwek-kwek and dipped it in a sweet sauce and surprisingly when we took a bite, there’s no quail egg bitten yet and it’s all flour! It took us two bites to taste the quail egg because of the thick coated in it. Another thing is it tastes like it’s not freshly made, it tastes like it’s like pre-heated over and over again until it’s sold.
Isaw: It refers to chicken intestines coiled onto skewers and grilled over a flaming hot charcoal. This street food costs 50 pesos per stick so we think that this is more clean than an ordinary grilled street food that we usually see anywhere along the way. It has the same taste as the authentic street food I’ve tasted before. So it’s a thumbs up for the isaw.
Fishball: It is one of the best filipino street food here in the Philippines. In my own opinion, fishball in Mercato is not worth it, it costs 50 pesos per stick but when you buy it in other street food stalls it only costs 50 cents per piece. So for me, fish ball in Mercato is not worth it. Also the sauce of the fishball is not tasty, even the fishball itself it is not cook well.
Dugo/Betamax: It is chicken blood that has been extracted from the chicken in liquid form. When the blood is placed in an open container and cooled down, the texture becomes thicker or in solid form. It is scalded to have a more solid form then cut into rectangular pieces. The rectangular blood resembles the shape of a Betamax tape and that’s why it was called Betamax. It costs P100.00 for 3 sticks but in ordinary street food stalls it would only cost P5.00 per stick. The Betamax in Mercato is too expensive for us as students and the taste is just the same as the Betamax of ordinary street foods. Overall, the food is good but the price is not right!
Inihaw na tenga ng baboy: I’ve been waiting for this barbeque’s turn that time and got disappointed with the taste. It doesn’t taste like the one that I’ve tried before, the flavor that I used to eat. Another thing is that it’s so chewy. Price ranging from 100 and above, not worth it though.
